HR College


HISTORY: the college started out with 500 students in June 1960 and it’s the first college to go autonomous.
STREAMS: Commerce, Management Studies

CAMPUS NOTES: The HR library has been revamped and how includes an air-conditioned reading room. The library has a collection of more than 43,000 books. A placement cell to assist students is also present on campus. The college offers a variety of vocational subjects such as advertising, sales promotion and sales management, tax procedure and practices, tourism and travel management. HR was the first college to introduce he Bachelor of Management Studies degree.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR: There are a number of clubs on campus including the Students Council, Council for Handling and Organising Inter-Collegiate Events, the Dramatic Society, Srishti – the Creative Club, the Marathi Wagmay Mandal, the Hindi Sahitya Parishad and other. The students have often won State and National level titles in sports such as cricket, squash, athletics, basketball, tennis and chess. The College’s Rotaratact Club is also active with a number of social services projects.

Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics


HISTORY: Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics was established in 1964 by the Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal trust.
STREAM: Commerce
CAMPUS NOTES: There are about 1,723 associations in the college. These include the Students’ Forum, Planning Forum, Speakers and Writers Club, Computer Society, the Economic Association, Wildlife and Nature Club, Hobby Centre, Dramatics Society, Music and Dance Society, Psychology Club, Hindi Sahitya Mandal, Marathi Sahitya Mandal, Sportin Axtion, and advertising and Marketing Circle. The College has its fair share of hangout zones, such as the vada pav stall outside college and Dheeraj’s a former zunka bhakar shop which now dishes up international favorites like lasagna, spaghetti, ravioli and even chocolate mousse.
While the college does not have a large campus, the air-conditional classrooms that it share with Mithibai College, make up for that loss. And here’s an extra dash of hyaan – it is compulsory to take Maths in Class XI.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR: The college is known for its Planning Forum, Computer Society and The English Literary Association. Umang, the annual college festival, plays host to 30,000 students annually and gives St. Xavier’s College’s Malhar a run for its money. The BMS festival is Drishti.

Ramniranjan Anandilal Podar College of Commerce and Economics


HISTORY: Built in 1941 in the neo-Gothic style, RA Podar College was the first non-governmental Commerce College in the city. In the last decade, the commerce students.
STREAMS: Commerce at both under-graduate and post-graduate levels. It also offers the Bachelor in Management Studies degree, a Post-graduate Diploma and one Professional Examination, which are meant to help student’s quality for Chartered Accountancy.

CAMPUS NOTES: If you lose track of the time while attending lectures, all you need do is look up at the ancient clock tower, which now also has a siren.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR: Student volunteers work in the villages of Chandip and Shivansai near Vajreshwari near Palghar. The Artists’ Guild is one of the most popular clubs in college.

Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics


HISTORY: History may not be one of the courses offered at Sydenham but the college has a historical background to it. Since 1901, K Subramani Aiyer had dreamed of established an institute devoted to education in Commerce. In 1907, Lord Sydenham of Combe took over as Governor of India. He was instrumental in making the Bachelor of Commerce degree a reality on October 22, 1913, with KS Aiyer as principal. On July 16, 1916, the college received Rs. 1,85,000 from the Lord Sydenham Memorial Committee and was then christened The Sydenham College of Commerce & Economics.
ADD-ON COURSES: Banking and Insurance advanced diploma course for Foreign Trade. The recent addition will be a new course in stock Market for BCom.
HOSTEL FACILITIES: The college has none of its own, but its students have the option of staying at the government hostels nearby. Boys can stay at the Government Boys Hostel on C Road (Churchgate).
The girls can stay at the Telang Memorial Hostel at C Road and the Savitribai Phule Hostel. All three government hostels are open for outside as well the students of Sydenham College.
CAMPUS NOTES: Brouhaha is Sydenham’s annual inter-collegiate festival and attracts students from 70 colleges all over the country. It is one of the best known college festivals in western India
Its events Arts and fine Arts to Informal and Tele-matches.
EXTRA-CURRICULARS: Sydenham is also India’s only college to publish its own newspaper. The college encourages sports and has good volleyball, football and basketball teams.
It is also known for its societies – there are 22 in all – which range from a book circle for the literary-minded, to a planning forum that aims to crate awareness about business and commerce through seminars. The campus comprises a specious main building, a basketball court are popular hangout zones.

Lala Lajpatrai College


HISTORY: A group of philanthropists came together to start a mission. Which was to provide world class education in the very heart of Mumbai. A trust was formed and named after Lala Lajpat Rai, the great freedom fighter, social reformer and educationist.

EXTRA-CURRICULARS: The college organizes an inter-collegiate youth festival, Tsunami, for BMS students. Other inter-collegiate festivals it has been organising over the last 10 years include Rendezvous, Lashkara and Anandotsav.
CAMPUS NOTES: There is a well-equipped gymnasium for staff and students. The college has a boxing ring where inter-collegiate boxing tournament are frequently held.

St. Andrew’s College of Arts, Science and Commerce


HISTORY: St. andrew’s College of Arts, Science and Commerce was established in June 1980. The first batch of students appeared for the junior college Std. XII exams in 1982.
STREAM: Arts, Science, Commerce, Mass Media, Management Studies, Information Technology, Accounts and Finance.
COMPUS NOTES: The College houses a telecommunication lab with the largest equipment. It also has good volleyball, basketball, hockey and throw ball courts. A gender cell, to highlight problems of girls through street plays and lecturers, was set up in 2002.

SIES College of Arts, Science and Commerce


HISTORY: The South Indian Education Society (SIES) is one of the oldest educational societies in India. Founded in 1932 by Shri M.V. Venkateshwaran with a modest six- student beginning. SIES has grown to become a conglomerate of various institutions with more than 15,000 students under its wings. In the process of imparting quality education to students, SIES has established high schools and various Arts, Science and Commerce colleges, along with academic and professional institutions of higher learning.
These include the Centre for Excellence in Management Research and Development, SIES School of Packaging, SIES Indian Institute of Environment, and SIES Graduate School of Technology (an engineering institute).
STREAM: Arts, Science, Commerce
ADD-ON COURSES: Only College in India that offers an Economics degree from the world-famous London School of Economics. The college also has additional courses on – Foundation Modules, Business Reading, Student Involvement, Personality Development, LTDP, yoga and meditation and foreign languages.
BEST KNOWN FOR: Academics and discipline bachelors courses in Biotechnology and Microbiology are popular. A strong philosophy department in the Arts stream. And the Bachelor in Management Studies.
CAMPUS NOTES: Well-equipped library for visually challenged student. SIES is also one of the few disabled-friendly campuses. Classes for the differently-abled are also specially conducted on the ground floor. SIES has also started a Zero Garbage programme in Sion. Though if does not have a fun canteen, the college has its share of popular hangouts outside the premises, such as Santosh Bhuvan, Café Coffee Day (at 15-minuts walking distance). Guru Kripa (the best place for a samosa in Mumbai) and even near the sandwich guy, Raju, just outside college.
EXTRA-CURRICULARS: Known for its learning towards Indian music and sports, especially basketball, shooting and tennis. The college is also popular for its inter-college festival Fantasies, and Disha, a career fair.

HISTORY: Nestled on a 45-acre campus, Bhavan’s College was established in 1946 by philosopher and statesman DR K M Munshi. The campus also has a huge botanical garden, which adds to its beauty.

HISTORY: Established in 1970, this is the oldest institution on the Vidyavihar campus. It is also the largest institution, with the maximum number of students, and has been consistently rated among the best colleges.

HISTORY: It started with 400 students in 1974.

HISTORY: The college was started in the year 1961 with 77 students on its rolls. The institute got affiliation with the Mumbai University for a single degree courses – BCom with just 77 students. HISTORY: L S Raheja College of Arts and Commerce as established in June 1980 by the Sadhana Education Society.
